El estado de Oklahoma, en la zona surcentral de Estados Unidos, fue declarado en alerta la noche del lunes (06.05.2024) por “graves y potencialmente mortales” tornados, informó el Servicio Nacional de Meteorología. (NWS, por sus siglas en inglés).

“El foco severo se está moviendo ahora hacia áreas con un riesgo alto/moderado (…) Ese riesgo se extenderá hasta bien entrada la noche para muchos. Disponga de varias formas de recibir avisos y de un plan de refugio”, notificó la institución a través de sus redes sociales.

Dentro de este estado de más de cuatro millones de habitantes, la zona de mayor riesgo es la población de Barnsdall y sus alrededores, donde el NWS alertó que a la “amenaza” le queda aún “un largo camino por recorrer” e instó a los ciudadanos a tener incluso un plan donde refugiarse si se agrava.

La situación actual en Oklahoma es de tormentas severas y granizos acompañados de la proliferación de tornados.

En la ciudad de Stillwater, con unos 50.000 habitantes y a hora y media en coche de Barnsdall, el Departamento de Policía local trabaja en la coordinación de asistencia por inundaciones que dejaron vehículos atrapados.

Por otra parte, a lo largo de lunes, el Centro de Pronósticos de Tormenta (SPC, en inglés) de EE.UU., advirtió que cerca de 70 millones de estadounidenses experimentarán tormentas, tornados y granizadas en las Planicies y el valle del río Ohio en las próximas horas.

“Es probable que haya múltiples tornados fuertes y de largo surco, granizo y fuertes vientos dañinos este lunes”, anticipaba en un mensaje el SPC, que avisó que las condiciones para estos fenómenos podrían extenderse hasta el miércoles.

Los meteorólogos explicaron que el mayor riesgo de estos fenómenos ocurriría el lunes, cuando un frente de aire frío y con baja humedad procedente del oeste se encontró con aire cálido y húmedo que avanza hacia el norte desde el Golfo de México.

La región con riesgos mayores de fenómenos meteorológicos graves era precisamente Oklahoma y el sur de Kansas.
