Guiao says Nambatac trade ‘painful, sad but needed to be made’

RAIN or Shine made a bittersweet Valentine’s Day move by sending its seven-year mainstay Rey Nambatac to Blackwater in exchange for TNT’s first-round draft pick and a second-round selection.

Difficult as the decision may be for Elasto Painters head coach Yeng Guiao to release Nambatac, who played for ROS in his entire PBA career thus far, it was one that he said had to be done.

“It’s really tough. That’s always a painful and sad decision but it needs to be made for the both of us na mag-benefit. I know what Rey (Nambatac) can do, he’s an excellent player, but we have such a long rotation with our guard positions. We wanted to give everybody a chance,” said Guiao.

Not enough minutes

On his end, Guiao believes the former Letran star didn’t get the minutes a player of his caliber should’ve had to maximize his versatile skillset.

The reason behind such a deficit in game time? ROS’ ‘long rotation of guards’ — one which includes the likes of young guns Andrei Caracut, Anton Asistio, Gian Mamuyac, and Shaun Ildefonso among others.

“Si Rey kasi will require a certain amount of minutes for his game to really come out. I was not able to give him that substantive number of minutes but I think where he goes, or where he is right now, or in the future, ‘yung galing niya will justify that,” Guiao said.

“His talent will justify his playing time if he’s playing for another team na hindi kasing heavy ng guard rotation namin. Kahit mahirap, tingin ko makakabuti sa both sides.”

In his seven years with the Elasto Painters, Nambatac posted career averages of 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in roughly 24 minutes played in 149 games for ROS.
