‘Deafening cacophony’: Hottest year in history must be measured with a ‘decibel meter’

Sky News host James Morrow says reports saying 2023 will be the hottest year in history must be measured with a “decibel meter” because it’s a “deafening cacophony”.

According to the World Meteorological Organisation, 2023 is “virtually certain” to be the hottest year on record, following a “deafening cacophony of broken records”.

The organisation said 2023 has been about 1.4 degrees above the global average preindustrial temperature from 1850 to 1990 and the last nine years have been the warmest nine in 174 years of recorded observations.

“Apparently [they measured this] with a decibel meter because it’s a ‘deafening cacophony’,” Mr Morrow said.

“This just feels like every single time you could have this really cold, wet, gross November and I’m sure we’re going to see headlines: ‘that was the hottest November we’ve had ever in Australia’.”
