Kremlin Quiet After Trump Encouraged Russia to Attack NATO Countries in Threatening Speech, Sending Fears Through Europe

Some people consider Donald Trump too close to Russia. They cite some of his latest remarks as evidence.

Knewz.com has learned about world reaction to the former United States President saying in some cases, he’d let Kremlin leaders ”do whatever the hell they want” to NATO countries.

So far, the Russian government is not commenting on Trump’s words.

“I am still [Vladimir] Putin’s press secretary, but not Trump’s,” CNBC and Reuters quoted spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying Monday, February 12.

But Peskov’s words were part of a story by the Russian government’s Tass news service about what Trump said during a campaign rally.

Russian President Vladimir Putin turned aside most questions about former President Trump and NATO during a two-hour questioning by Tucker Carlson in recent days.

But Trump’s comment during an appearance in South Carolina Saturday, February 10 went all the way to the top of the military alliance.

“Any suggestion that allies will not defend each other undermines all of our security, including that of the U.S., and puts American and European soldiers at increased risk,” a statement from Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg to the Associated Press said.

The director of international policy for the European Union was concerned as well.

“NATO cannot be an ‘a la carte’ military alliance… depending on the humor of the president of the U.S.,” Josep Borrell said.

“No election campaign is an excuse for playing with the security of the Alliance,” Polish Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said. Poland and Ukraine share a border.

The issue for Trump seems to be countries that don’t contribute enough to NATO in defense budgets. But Trump talked during his four years in office about potentially removing the U.S. from NATO completely.

“You didn’t pay? You’re delinquent?” Trump recalled telling one unnamed government leader while in the White House. “No, I would not protect you… You gotta pay your bills.”

Senior adviser Jason Miller did not walk back Trump’s words, indicating other NATO countries must spend more.

“When you don’t pay your defense spending, you can’t be surprised that you get more war,” Miller said.

Under a July 2023 agreement, all 31 NATO members must spend at least two percent of their gross domestic product on defense. The Labor Department indicates based on the current economy, the U.S. must allocate about $560 billion.

But a report issued by the alliance last year showed only 10 countries met the two-percent threshhold. Nearly half of them were at 1.5% or below.

That has changed in some places in the wake of the Russian attack on Ukraine.

A German Foreign Ministry social media post responded to Trump’s talk with the hashtag “Stronger Together.”

“‘One for all and all for one.’ This NATO creed keeps more than 950 million people safe,” a post on X (formerly Twitter) said.
