PSL: Babar Azam loses cool after crowd trolls batter with ‘ZimBabar’ chants
Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam was trolled by a group of fans during a Pakistan Super League game. Azam, who was sitting on the sidelines with technical staff, copped chants of ‘Zimbabar’ from a group of fans. The current Peshawar Zalmi captain looked riled up by the chants and threatened to throw a water bottle at them.
Thankfully, common sense prevailed and Azam stopped midway through the action, and sat down in his chair. The former Pakistan captain looked visibly agitated by the trolling by his countrymen in the Pakistan Super League.
Why Zimbabar?
Babar Azam has been a prolific batter for Pakistan since his debut in 2015. Once seen as a successor to Virat Kohli on the world stage, much was expected of the Pakistan batter in all formats of the game. However, in the last 2-3 years, Babar has caught a nasty reputation for failing in key matches for Pakistan and performing in games that are either easy or are of no consequence.
Babar has played 18 matches against Zimbabwe in all formats of the game and has scored 693 runs at an average of 57.75. The chant Zimbabar originates from the belief that Babar needs a series against Zimbabwe to snap out of poor form and score some runs.
Recent Form
Babar Azam had a terrible time in 2023 across formats. Under his captaincy, the Pakistan side were not able to perform well in the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup 2023. This led to Babar Azam getting sacked as captain across all formats of the game.Â
After the ODI World Cup, the batter was not able to have a meaningful impact in the Australia Test series, but performed well against New Zealand in the 5-match T20I series away from home. Babar will hope to provide an apt reply to his critics in the T20 World Cup, set to be held in June, this year.
