David Moyes is looking to sign a player in January who can give West Ham a “burst of energy” in their bid for Champions League football, just as Jesse Lingard did last season.

Lingard was a January loan signing from Manchester United and scored nine goals in 16 appearances for the Hammers as they went on to finish sixth and qualify for Europe. The 28-year-old impressed so much that Moyes wants to see the England international back at West Ham in January.

West Ham have kicked on again this season without Lingard and sit fourth after 14 games of the season but go into Saturday’s London derby against leaders Chelsea without a win in their last three, with Arsenal just a point behind them in fifth.

With Manchester United and Tottenham both looking to challenge after appointing Ralf Rangnick and Antonio Conte respectively, West Ham face a real fight to maintain their top four push, a battle in which the manager thinks they may need some new impetus in January.

“I don’t think that now we’re in need of loads of quantity,” said Moyes.

“I would like to try and see if I could add bits of quality where you could say, ‘Oh wow, he’s going to threaten the team’. Last year, bringing Jesse, folk probably thought he’d not done a lot at Man United not played and he came in and gave us an incredible lift.

“I’ve got to keep looking for the players who can give us the burst of energy which we need to maybe keep us going. Then there is the other part of the player, is it someone who I’m going to have in the team for the next three or four years. To actually buy that one who will give you the exact burst of energy at the moment is probably really, really big money.”

Moyes has criticised his attacking players for their performances in recent games and earlier this week said he wants to sign someone who can play in the four forward positions come January, especially with Said Benrahma going to the Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria for more than a month in the new year.

Lingard and defender Kurt Zouma, who will face his former side Chelsea for the first time since his £29.8million move to the London Stadium this weekend, have been two standout signings in 2021 and Moyes says that he wants to keep the standard high going into the winter window.

“I’m not saying that we’re still not going to try and find a Vladimir Coufal or someone else of that level,” said Moyes.

“I think that we’re trying to keep the standards up.”

Asked directly about Lingard, Moyes said: “I can’t really talk about him because he’s a Manchester United player and it’s not for me to talk. But he was really good for us.

“Jesse knows what we all think of him here. My disappointment for Jesse would be I think he’s such a talented football player and he’s not playing.”

While the contest for fourth remains tight, West Ham are the ones to be caught and, with the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United having to recover from poor starts to the season, the Hammers boss – like many – feels this may be their best chance at breaking into the Champions League places and achieving something truly remarkable.

“I probably would go along with it,” said the Scot.

“This is a good chance. Not because of what the other teams are doing but because of West Ham.

“I can’t really say what Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United, Leicester and Brighton are going to do. But we’ve got a good team.

“We’ve lost Angelo [Ogbonna] who has been a big part of it. But if we keep doing as well as we’re doing the other teams will have to catch us. The pressure from those clubs to finish in the top four is huge but I think we’ve got a chance. We’re growing the club. Unless you’ve got huge money you very rarely make a jump like we’ve done.”
