Darren Gough takes huge pay cut to leave talkSPORT and become Yorkshire director of cricket

Former Yorkshire cricket captain Darren Gough looks set to enjoy a surprise return to the county as their new director of cricket, marking his first role at the club since he retired from the sport back in 2008.

The 51-year-old remains a hugely popular figure around the club and is viewed as the perfect candidate to restore pride as the club currently reels from the fallout of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.

According to the Cricketer, Gough has also agreed to take a drastic cut in salary from what he is currently earning as a primetime presenter on radio station talkSPORT.

Despite establishing himself as a prominent voice in sports media, it is rumoured that Gough has always harboured ambitions to return to cricket in a coaching capacity – and could be taking a pay cut worth as much as £150,000-a-year to make it happen.

Gough enjoyed 15 years on the playing staff at Headingley across two separate stints either side of three year spell with Essex.

The club are currently rebuilding after a cull of their coaching team in the wake of the recent scandal.

They announced last week that coach Andrew Gale and director of cricket Martyn Moxon had left their roles at the club and Gough, who publicly reached out to support Rafiq when he went public with his allegations, is in the frame to lead a new-look setup.

While many would argue Gough lacks the credentials to take on such a role, his legacy at Yorkshire is viewed as something the club’s hierarchy hope will inspire future success.

The huge upheaval and turn over in staff has been described as necessary as a means of “regaining trust”, according to chairman Lord Patel.

The decisions “were difficult to make but are in the best interests of the club”, claims Patel, who added: “Without making important changes to how we are run, we cannot move on from the past to become a culture which is progressive and inclusive.

“We want to make Yorkshire a place for everyone, from all backgrounds. To do this, we need to rebuild our culture and instil positive values.

“We are determined to learn from the mistakes of the past to become a club which people can trust.

“We have a huge rebuilding job to do but we are confident that this heralds a step forward towards a brighter future.”

Gough is expected to announce his departure from talkSPORT before being unveiled as director at a press conference sometime this week.
