Should Kaizer Chiefs target Orlando Pirates goalkeeper?

Kaizer Chiefs are thought to be pursuing an alternative target after pulling out of a race for a top goalkeeper.

It is no secret that Chiefs were interested in signing Stanley Nwabali from Chippa United as their next goalkeeper.

Nwabali, who currently plies his trade for the Eastern Cape-based side, was a surprise inclusion as first choice for Nigeria at Afcon. This was due to the fact that he had only one cap for the Super Eagles prior to the showpiece. He would end up playing all seven games for Nigeria in Ivory Coast, keeping four clean sheets. He also played a huge role in the team finishing as runners-up at the tournament. That also saw his name and reputation skyrocket, with more European clubs reportedly on his radar, making things difficult for Chiefs.

Beyond European interest, Chiefs arch-rivals Orlando Pirates were also believed to have entered the race. In fact, this publication had reported they were willing to swap Ghana’s number one Richard Ofori for Nwabali. That deal is also thought to involve a cash exchange. Whatever the Buccaneers end up doing in their pursuit, doesn’t seem like Amakhosi will be willing to match.

Chiefs searching for keeper

Now earlier this week, this publication reported that Chiefs were looking to return to Richards Bay’s Salim Magoola. Furthermore, it has now been suggested that Amakhosi are also interested in Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Veli Mothwa. But should they also be considering the shock signing of Richard Ofori from their arch rivals Pirates?

Ofori has been out of favour for the past two season’s at Pirates. This publication also reported that he club has not engaged him on fresh terms. Chiefs could take advantage of this stalemate as they look to solve their own goalkeeping problems. With veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune either retiring or leaving, it would make sense for Amakhosi to target an experienced campaigner.

Ofori from Pirates a good option?

Ofori is Ghana’s number one and has plenty of continental and international experience. He is also just 30, which means he is entering his prime years as a goalkeeper. He was a solid player for Pirates before the injuries and he has stayed injury free this season. Provided he can keep it like that and gain momentum he could give Chiefs five to seven years.
