Hätten Sie gewusst, um welches neue Auto es hier geht? “Das erste vollelektrische Fahrzeug der unkonventionellen Challenger-Brand setzt mit seinem emotionalen Design und seiner verzögerungsfreien Leistung neue Standards in der Welt der Elektrofahrzeuge.” Cupra, die Sportmarke im Seat-Konzern, feiert im feinsten Denglisch den Born ab, als wäre er das Nonplusultra unter den E-Autos. Stimmt das? Wir sind den Bruder des VW ID.3 jetzt gefahren.

Und schon damals dachte ich: Der Spanier sieht besser aus als das Wolfsburger Seifenstück auf Rädern.
Doch bis zur Markteinführung sollte es noch dauern. Der el-Born, benannt nach einem Szeneviertel in Barcelona, wurde im Laufe der Zeit zum Born und wanderte unter das Dach von Cupra. Seit September 2021 kann der Cupra Born endlich bestellt werden, zunächst aber nur in der Variante mit 58-kWh-Akku und 150 kW (204 PS) Leistung.
Global Tech News DailyBei dem Spanier handelt es sich übrigens um einen Sachsen, denn der Born läuft gemeinsam mit dem VW ID.3 in Zwickau vom Band. Kein Wunder, schließlich ist die Technik bei beiden identisch. Auch die Optik wirkt in weiten Teilen vertraut. Doch Cupra würzt im Detail anders: Hier eine andere Struktur in der C-Säule, dort ein fetter Heckspoiler. Am deutlichsten unterscheiden sich ID.3 und Born bei der Frontpartie. Letzterer weist einen schnabelartigen Vorderwagen mit eckigen Scheinwerfern auf, wodurch der Cupra einen aggressiven Raubvogelblick bekommt.
Damit wirkt der Born fraglos markanter, der ID.3 aber freundlicher. Während dieser Aspekt natürlich Geschmackssache bleibt, sammelt der Cupra innen eindeutige Pluspunkte. Zwar bleibt es bei der Kombination aus großen Touchscreen und kleinem Fahrerdisplay, aber mit Stoffeinsätzen in Alcantara-Art und kupferfarbenen Akzenten wirkt der Born deutlich hochwertiger.

Geblieben ist die gewöhnungsbedürftige Bedienung fast ohne echte Knöpfe. Die Lautstärke am Lenkrad mit Wischbewegungen zu regulieren, darauf muss man erst einmal kommen. Ohne Direktwahl-Tasten in der Mittelkonsole, wie es sie bei anderen Produkten aus dem VW-Konzern gibt, lenken zu viele Zwischenschritte vom Verkehr ab.
Und was ich auch nicht verstehe: Warum verspielt Cupra den Raumvorteil des Elektroantriebs durch eine mauerhohe Mittelkonsole zwischen Fahrer und Beifahrer? Ansonsten ist das Platzangebot nämlich insbesondere im Fond vorzüglich. Und auch am Kofferraum kann man nicht meckern: 385 Liter sind fair dimensioniert.
Wie fährt er sich?
Jetzt aber ran an die Buletten, Verzeihung, Tapas. Wenig überraschend bringen die schon erwähnten 204 PS plus 310 Newtonmeter Drehmoment den über 1,8 Tonnen schweren Born flott in Fahrt. Nach 7,3 Sekunden sind 100 km/h erreicht, maximal ist Tempo 160 drin. Es sei denn, Sie nutzen den Eco-Modus. Hier wird auf 130 km/h begrenzt. Doch er bringt kaum zusätzliche Reichweite gegen über dem Normalzustand. Und auch hier ist keine heftigere Rekuperation feststellbar, ebenso im B-Modus des Getriebes.

Überhaupt die Rekuperation: Im Gegensatz zu manchem Konkurrenten kann man beim Cupra nicht zwischen verschiedenen Stufen wählen. Und das, was vorhanden ist, gibt sich für meinen Geschmack recht mild. Und sonst so? Nun, der Born gibt sich im Vergleich zum ID.3 sportlicher, ohne unangenehm zu werden. Die Lenkung reagiert schön direkt, trotz 20-Zoll-Felgen auf dem Testwagen rollt dieser nicht zu straff ab. Erst bei wirklich schlechter Piste rumpelt es vernehmlich.
Bis hierhin klingt alles ordentlich, doch als Achillesferse erweist sich die für den starken Motor eigentlich zu kleine Batterie. Gerade im Winter wird sie zügig leergesaugt und selbst nach einer hundertprozentigen Ladung sind die offiziellen 424 Kilometer Reichweite pures Wunschdenken. 267 Kilometer standen bei uns auf dem Display, 300 klappen mit Optimismus.

Was kostet er?
Dabei ist der Born noch nicht einmal ein exzessiver Stromsäufer: 16,2 kWh auf 100 Kilometer im Landstraßenbetrieb, 21 kWh auf der Autobahn mit maximal 130 km/h gehen in Ordnung, wenngleich Cupra zwischen 15,5 und 16,8 kWh angibt. Aber der Winter ist keine günstige Jahreszeit für Elektroautos. Auch beim Laden: Mehr als kurzzeitige 70 kW waren nicht drin, 100 kW sollen theoretisch machbar sein.

Wie sieht es preislich aus? Vor Abzug von Prämien steht der 58-kWh-Born mit 37.220 Euro in der Liste. Damit ist er zwar geringfügig teurer als ein vergleichbarer ID.3, bietet aber mehr für sein Geld: Angefangen bei serienmäßigen 18-Zoll-Alufelgen bis hin zum feineren Innenraum. Cupra-typisch bereichern diverse “Dinamica”-Pakete die Aufpreisliste, leider ebenso die Wärmepumpe. Ähnlich wie bei VW kostet sie auch hier freche 990 Euro Aufpreis. Da lohnt sich ein Seitenblick zu Fahrzeugen wie dem Kia e-Soul, der sie serienmäßig hat.
Fazit:
Der Cupra Born ist bis zur Modellpflege des VW ID.3 die bessere, weil feinere Alternative. Wer unbedingt ein MEB-Elektroauto möchte, sollte sich den Born einmal anschauen, jedoch noch auf die 77-kWh-Batterie warten. Kritikpunkte bleiben die mangelnde Rekuperation, die schlechte Bedienung und die aufpreispflichtige Wärmepumpe. Wer lediglich einen kompakten Stromer sucht, ist mit Hyundai/Kia oder dem Basismodell des Tesla Model 3 besser beraten.
