BMW M asegura que lo mantendrá durante más años, así que aún queda cierto resquicio de esperanza.
A pesar de la bajada de ventas de coches con cambio manual, hay alguna esperanza de que el final de esta caja mecánica no sea tan temprana como pensamos. Por ejemplo, Frank van Meel, máximo responsable de BMW M, promete que la mantendrá viva durante más años, aunque la transmisión automática empiece a dominar los mercados.
El jefe de la firma germana lo aseguró en vista de los pedidos del M2, pues la mitad son de versiones manuales. Por lo tanto, todavía un interés notable en coches con tres pedales, más aún si son deportivos, para ser todavía más protagonista de la conducción.
“A los clientes les encanta el cambio manual”
“Desde un punto de vista técnico, hay pocas razones para salvar el cambio manual. Es más pesado, más lento y el consumo de combustible es algo más elevado. Pero al cliente y a los aficionados les encanta, pues les permite demostrar que pueden ‘domar’ a la ‘bestia’. Queremos mantenerlo”, dijo van Meel a Autocar.
Lamentablemente, varias marcas ya han abandonado o han anunciado la progresiva desaparición de la caja manual en sus gamas. Volkswagen la retirará en 2030 y Mercedes-Benz la irá eliminando a partir de 2023.
Según van Meel, la caja manual forma parte del atractivo emocional de los coches BMW M. En concreto, citó que Estados Unidos es el mayor mercado de la compañía para los coches M manuales y que mientras los clientes digan que lo quieren, “nosotros se lo daremos”.

¿Caja manual en coches ‘normales’?
La nueva generación del M2 Coupé debutará en octubre y seguro que dispondrá de una cambio manual de seis velocidades. Los M3 y M4 Coupé también están disponibles con esta configuración, aunque no en España, pues aquí solo se venden con la transmisión automática M Steptronic.
Ojalá que esta filosofía de BMW M también se aplique en coche más ‘mundanos’, pensados para economías de clase media, pues muchos conductores que no son adinerados también disfrutan de los vehículos con tres pedales.
En principio, con los coches 100% eléctricos, la caja mecánica acabará desapareciendo casi por completo, aunque veremos si se generan soluciones para simular cambios de marcha ‘analógicos’.
