What a Detroit Lions trade back in 2024 NFL Draft might look like

One of the many possibilities for the Detroit Lions in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is to trade back, which would net Detroit an extra pick in addition to the second-rounder they would receive.

Even general manager Brad Holmes has suggested that doing so is a possibility, even though Lions fans might be disappointed with such a scenario, especially with the draft being in Detroit this year.

“We have to do the right thing for the organization and if it makes sense and it lines up and it’s the right thing to do, then we have to do the right thing,” he said, per David Komer of FOX 2 Detroit. “Say that happens where the fans have been waiting there all night for this pick and you know, we get an offer that we really can’t turn down, hopefully our fans will forgive us — now we won’t expect immediate forgiveness right then and there.”

So, what might a trade back look like?

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently explored that option in his mock draft featuring a trade idea for each team. He suggests a deal that sends the No. 29 overall pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for their second-rounder (No. 34) and their fourth-rounder (No. 103).

Barnwell argues that the Pats could be looking to add some offensive line help at the end of the first round, which is logical if New England takes a quarterback early in the first round like many expect them to.

When it comes to the Lions’ side of things, they come away with the better of the deal based on trade value charts, and the deal nets them the fourth-round pick they’re missing due to the T.J. Hockenson trade. Making this trade more ideal is the fact that Detroit only moves back a handful of spots.

This is a realistic scenario for the Lions, but it will all come down to who is on the board in their original spot.
