Want your dream job? Avoid these topics during an interview

  • The challenges of your previous/current position
  • Any time off plans
  • Compensation or benefits over the work stream

Speaking to Business Insider, Bonnie – who has been a recruiter for the past 10 years – opened about what pieces of information you should keep to yourself during an interview.

She noted that during any discussion, you should consider what will be most compelling to a hiring manager.

First, you should avoid discussing the challenges you faced in your previous job.

‘It may even leave them thinking the candidate is the problem,’ she told the outlet.

Bonnie explained that you shouldn’t harp on the negative circumstances of your old job, and instead remind the hiring manager that you’re excited for future opportunities.

Some examples of what to say if asked why you left your previous position or why’re you hoping to nail this one are, ‘I’m holding out for the right opportunity, and I really see that with this role specifically because I’ve planned over 30 virtual events over the last few years, and really see this playing to my strengths.’

Bonnie also said you could say: ‘I’m really eager to work under a manager I can learn from — looking at some of the initiatives you’ve led here, I know I can add value, and continue to stretch in my role under your leadership.’

Next, the career expert explained that you should avoid discussing any upcoming time off – whether that be parental leave, medical needs, or vacation – with the hiring manager.

She told the outlet: ‘Employers are not legally allowed to discriminate against jobseekers who are pregnant or who may need accommodations, but it’s very hard to prove that these are the reasons a job seeker wasn’t considered for a role.

‘Employers may not even realize they are doing it due to implicit bias.

‘They aren’t allowed to ask, and you’re under no obligation to disclose this information during an interview process either.’

Bonnie explained that if you bring any of these topics up during an interview, the person interviewing you may just decide to go with a different candidate because they aren’t as ‘invested’ in accommodating you during the initial meeting.

She suggested that you instead tell them about your time off or medical needs during the offer stage because they will be more willing to work around you.

Lastly, Bonnie said you should never be overly enthusiastic about the compensation, or the benefits of a job.

She told the outlet: ‘Focus on what you can give rather than what you can get.’

The recruiter explained that hiring managers are looking for people who are passionate about the ‘work stream.’

In the past, Bonnie said you should lie about why you’re leaving your job, why you wanted the position, and your long-term plans.
