A Russian private jet carrying six people crashed in a mountainous region in Afghanistan after disappearing from the radar earlier on Saturday.

Rescuers have been deployed to the scene near the Zebak district in Badakhshan province, 155 miles north-east of the capital Kabul.

Russian civil aviation authorities said a Dassault Falcon 10 went missing with four crew members and two passengers on board.

The Russian-registered aircraft ‘stopped communicating and disappeared from radar screens’, authorities said.

The flight started from Thailand’s U-Tapao-Rayong-Pattaya International Airport.

It remains unconfirmed who was on on board, but the plane had been operating as a charter ambulance flight on a route from Gaya, India, to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, then onwards to Zhukovsky International Airport in Moscow.

‘The plane has crashed but the location is not known yet,’ Zabihullah Amiri, head of the provincial information department said without giving further details.

‘We have sent teams but they have not arrived yet. We were informed by local people in the morning.’

He added that it could take up to 12 hours to reach the mountains.

A video circulating on social media shows smoke rising from a site where the jet is reported to have crashed.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova also said the Russian Embassy in Afghanistan is working with local officials on the incident.
