Cricket fans slam 'childish' Steve Smith for showing 'no dignity' as he BLOWS UP at Usman Khawaja over shocking run-out

Smith has been berated for his reaction to a run-out with Usman Khawaja A huge mix-up between the pair left Smith stranded for just six runsHe gesticulated wildly to Khawaja and continued to show his fury walking off Fans were up in arms, calling the reaction 'childish' and 'petulant'Australia finished the day at 3-98 after bowling Sri Lanka out for 212

Aussie batter Steve Smith has been slammed by cricket fans for his response to a huge mix-up that led to a run-out during Australia’s Test against Sri Lanka, with his reaction labelled ‘childish’, ‘petulant’, ‘disrespectful’ and showing ‘no dignity’.

Smith came in with the score at 2-75 late in the day after Australia restricted Sri Lanka to just 212, but a mix-up with opener Usman Khawaja saw Smith run-out for just six off 11 balls.

It left Australia still rather precariously placed at 3-98 at the end of the day’s play, still trailing by 114 runs on a Galle International Stadium pitch that is proving difficult to bat on.

While some put the blame squarely at the feet of Khawaja, other fans debated who was really at fault – though most completely agreed Smith’s response was uncalled for, regardless.

Oh no… no. no, no.

In the footage, Smith hits a forward defensive shot towards cover, holds his hand up and calls no, then starts taking off for a single, with both batters attempting the run before Khawaja appears to send Smith back despite almost meeting the middle.

Smith dived back for the crease but was caught short.

‘Here’s trouble … Steve Smith is absolutely furious, livid … confusion all around,’ commentators said as they called the game live.

Smith continued to wildly gesticulate, mutter and shake his head the entire way back into the pavilion, with one Twitter user remarking: ‘Fortunately Australia have two team buses. Don’t expect the two to be in the same one tonight.’

Many would argue there is never a reason to openly tear strips off a teammate, regardless of who is in the wrong.

Steve Smith leaves the ground after putting in a huge dive to avoid being run-out

Eccentricities and brilliance have been Smith’s calling card for a number of years, but he’s now 32nd on a list of highest Test averages since the 2019 Ashes series, and he hasn’t scored a century in over 18 months.

Fans and pundits seemed to indicate his hyper-focus on individual run-making has led him down a ‘petulant’ path and said he needs to ‘grow up’.

OK. It’s a bad mix up. But what does the team need in that moment? Go and tell your partner not to worry about it and make a big score. Instead with Smith it’s all “Me-Me-Me. I must make the big score”.

— Anthony Leach (@ahleach) June 29, 2022

Yes it’s misunderstanding or miscommunication but the way he is over reacting is just too childish. Another brain fade moment of Mr Smith who is still a vice captain and the captain and coach who sail that ship in those 2 years of storm are out of team. Figure that

— Ankit (@ankitkshukla) June 29, 2022

Smith’s first call is no. Regardless of whose fault it is, he’s an international cricketer, and the display of petulance can wait for the change rooms.

— Adam Hourigan (@adamhfoto) June 29, 2022

A bit of dignity walking off please Steve Smith. Keep the hopefully mature and reflective discussion with your team mate for the privacy of the dressing room. You being so childishly demonstrative is more of an embarrassment than the runout.

— JoJo (@jojobythebeach) June 29, 2022

Smith how desperate Smith is to get runs after a dry spell.

— 007pch (5G loaded) (@007pch) June 29, 2022

Thank you Steve Smith for proving me right that you are a sook and carry on like a spoiled brat. You called no and get upset when you get run out. Of course it’s someone else’s fault. Never ever should be in a leadership position, just a horrible person. #SLvAUS

— PB (@bmanmelb) June 29, 2022

He also left himself open to criticism for pushing the boundaries to get a dicey single in a five-day Test match.

Khawaja has never been known for being the strongest fielder or runner between the wickets – but he is certainly serviceable enough at Test level, and Smith is a tremendous athlete.

And, of course, who’s fault was it really?

There is often no definitive answer when it comes to run-outs, and many social media fans and pundits couldn’t agree on whether it was Khawaja’s or Smith’s fault.

Calls no, then, while still looking at the ball, takes off for a single. It is his call right from the get first rule of running between the wickets is in front of square, its the striker’s call. If he calls no and stays, Khawaja doesn’t continue with the run. Smith at fault IMHO

— Phil Schultz (@philschultz11) June 29, 2022

Smith at fault here. He started, stuttered then started again – the hesitation made Khwaja doubt Smith was committed to running.

— donutphilosophy 🍩 (@donutphilosophy) June 29, 2022

Why take a risky single like that in a Test match 🤷‍♂️

— Ken Swift (@freakWSA) June 29, 2022

Steve Smith is livid. But that’s a run out. Khawaja was too distracted and sent him back so late. Smith run out. Game stays alive.

— Nikhil 🏏 (@CricCrazyNIKS) June 29, 2022

Prominent cricket journalist Andrew Wu even cheekily suggested Smith was unlucky Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella was the one throwing the ball, given his torrid start behind the stumps.

‘The way Dickwella has been keeping, Steve Smith ‘s a bit stiff the keeper was the one throwing the ball in and not taking it at the stumps,’ he wrote on Twitter.

Khawaja, who finished the day on 47 not out, will now look to consolidate with Travis Head (6 not out) and build a good lead for Australia on day two.
