COVID-19: Hungry Jack's boss Jack Cowin says WA needs to ‘get on same page' with border restrictions

Hungry Jack’s billionaire boss Jack Cowin has a strong message for anti-vaxxers and Western Australia.

The fast-food entrepreneur, who is fully vaccinated, said every Australian State and Territory will need to get on the same page for the country to open up and “get ourselves out of jail”.

Earlier this month, Premier Mark McGowan said he expects the State to reopen “once we reach very high levels of vaccination” which he indicted would be “next year.”

While WA and Queensland have been largely successful in keeping out COVID-19 with strong restrictions, Mr Cowin said their borders will need to open up.

“I think the reality is that once we get to a stage where we have a high percentage of vaccinated people, that they (WA and Queensland) will have to come under the same ruling,” he told The Australian.

“This may take a while for them politically to adjust to this, but eventually everyone will play by the same rules.”

To encourage Hungry Jack’s staff to get vaccinated, the rich-lister has launched an incentive scheme which includes prizes and gift cards. He praised his staff, saying the vast majority had been compliant.

This comes as Qantas announced delays for its resumption of flights between Perth and the nation’s two biggest cities by another two months, while its flagship Perth to London service has also been scrapped until at least the second quarter of 2022.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce announced on Monday domestic flying between Western Australia and Victoria and NSW would be delayed by another two months to February 1 next year due to their assumptions on border closures.

But in some good news for the airline, Mr Joyce also revealed the planned restart for travel between Victoria and NSW had been brought forward due to Victoria’s road map out of lockdown.

Mr Joyce said flights between the two states would now resume on November 5 instead of December 1.

Mr Joyce said their discussions with the WA government had indicated their borders won’t be open to Victoria and NSW until early next year.

“We’ve sadly had to cancel the flying we had planned on those routes in the lead-up to Christmas,” he said.
