The man who granted Winnipeg an NHL franchise 13 years ago is back in the city as the owners of the Winnipeg Jets have been publicly lamenting low attendance and the impact it could have on the team’s future.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman intends to be one of those in attendance for Tuesday’s game at Canada Life Centre against the St. Louis Blues.
Two hours before game time, however, he’s holding a press conference with local media, when he’s expected to talk about the Jets’ decreasing season-ticket numbers and address the club’s future viability.
Bettman has said he will then go to ice level and talk to fans, as well as answer some questions that had been submitted ahead of time.

In an interview with The Athletic earlier this month, Winnipeg Jets chairman Mark Chipman said the team needs to get back to a season ticket base of 13,000, and current attendance numbers are “not going to work over the long haul.”
The Jets are struggling to draw fans to Canada Life Centre, the NHL’s smallest permanent arena, with a capacity of 15,225 for hockey games.
According to the Athletic article, Winnipeg’s season-ticket base has decreased 27 per cent in three years, from approximately 13,000 to just under 9,500.
