The temperature in Baguio City dropped to 12.2 degree Celsius on Friday morning, according to PAGASA-Baguio chief meteorological officer Engr. Larry Esperanza.

Esperanza told GMA News Online that PAGASA Baguio Synoptic Station recorded the temperature at 6:30 a.m.

He said this was the coldest temperature recorded in Baguio City since the Amihan season.

In its 5 a.m. weather forecast for Northern Luzon, PAGASA said temperature in Benguet may dip to 11°C on Friday. Meanwhile, 13°C is the possible coldest temperature in Mountain Province and 14°C in Ifugao.

The coldest temperature this Amihan season was recorded in La Trinidad, Benguet on January 18 at 10.8°C, according to PAGASA.

In October 2023, PAGASA declared the start of the Amihan or Northeast Monsoon season.

Strong northeasterly winds have been observed over Northern Luzon due to the strengthening of the high-pressure system over Siberia.

PAGASA also monitored the gradual cooling of the surface air temperature over the northeastern part of Luzon, and the increasing mean sea level pressure.

”These meteorological patterns indicate the onset of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) season in the country,” PAGASA had said.

”With these developments, the northeasterly wind flow is expected to become more dominant in the country, bringing cold and dry air. An episode of wind and cold temperature surges may also be expected in the coming months,” it added.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
