Coronavirus: Expert warns one in three colds are linked to the disease

Asia's Tech News Daily

Scientists and experts have been working tirelessly to track and understand the new starting that has mutated from the original coronavirus called Omicron. Brits are buckling up for their second winter dodging the virus, as the government implemented new restrictions last week, making facemasks mandatory in public spaces such as transport and shops. With Christmas around the corner, many are hoping to make up for last years cancelled Christmas but have been left disappointed as travel plans get cancelled for some wanting to exit the UK due to the ever-changing red list and pricey quarantine rules.

Times Radio host Stig Abell spoke with Professor Tim Spector to find out more about the new variant and what signs people should look out for.

Discussing the difference between a normal winter Flu and the new coronavirus variant Omicron, Stig Abell said: “So as you’re concerned people might have cold-like symptoms, and there’s a super cold going around and there are various other colds going around.

“And they might not feel they have to test and maybe there should be messaging just for people to test if they’re not at all sure they should test.”

Responding to Mr Abell’s statements on the virus, Mr Spector said: “Absolutely, and this is what other countries have already done.

“They have public health messages that cold-like symptoms are a clear symptom of Covid.”

Professor Spector added: “At the moment we’re estimating that somewhere between one in three, and one in four colds are due to Covid.”

“So that’s quite a high rate of people that are currently going missing, or not getting even bothered to get a lateral flow test or getting a PCR test.

Christmas party season is now, but so is the virus, scientists and experts are currently trying to stop the spread of the new variant, the data on the new variant is not fully researched yet.

Professor Spector said: “Going to parties and spreading it around so if that transfers to Omicron then you know we’re going to be compounding the problem much faster than we would need to.”

“So if we’re serious about trying to slow the spread, we really should be again telling people to look out for all the symptoms.”Vaccinated people can still contract and spread the coronavirus but symptoms and signs may appear to be different in those cases to those who have not been vaccinated.Professor Spector concluded: “Particularly if you’ve been vaccinated, which are going to milder, much more like a cold and maybe hard, very hard to tell apart.” DON’T MISSLinkMacron ally ‘supports’ UK troops joining French border if they do not ‘twist’ alliance [INSIGHT]France election polls: Le Pen gains on Macron again as Barnier support ‘stagnates’ [ANALYSIS]Expert warns it’s ‘too late to make a difference’ as UK to be hit by Omicron wave [VIDEO]

ast week new rules were given to all UK citizens to follow to help stop the spread of the virus, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “I think what we’re doing is responding to the pandemic.

“We were the first country in the world to take decisive measures to tackle Omicron.

“We put about 10 countries automatically, immediately, onto the red list and we said that anybody coming from any country in the world would have to quarantine for a couple of days.

“I don’t think we need to change the overall guidance and advice we’re giving about Omicron in this country.”
