It started as an April Fool’s joke, but the UK’s largest tech retailer, Currys, swapped touchscreens for tandoori today, giving away free meals to hungry customers by popular demand.
The tech giant trialled its ‘Curries for Tech’ initiative to spice up the shopping experience for customers in London today.
All foodies had to do was bring in old, unwanted and broken e-waste, to get their hands on a free curry – and the day was a huge success.
The offer was available today only (April 11) at the Croydon store (12 Trojan Way Purley Way Croydon, CR0 4XL), between 12pm and 2pm.
Partnering with Caribbean restaurant, Top it Off, they created two signature Currys curries that were gifted to customers in-store, when they recycled their tech trash.
Fuelled by demand following what began as an April Fool’s joke, the UK’s largest tech retailer, Currys, swapped out touchscreens for tandoori, giving away free meals to hungry customers.
Today the company trialled its ‘Curries for Tech’ initiative to spice up the shopping experience for Britons
Shoppers had a choice between the Currys Chicken Curry or the Vegan Tech-a Masala, both served with a side of Currys purple rice.
The bizarre vision became a reality when an April Fools Day prank led customers to believe the tech giant would be serving up curries to customers.
It comes after the company revealed that it gets a lot of messages from the public, asking the brand if they can actually order a curry.
One customer wrote: ‘Hi, I’d like to order a curry,’ with a second asking: ‘Do you sell curry?’
‘Can I have a curry chicken masala please?’ and ‘Can I get a lamb vindaloo and a korma cheers mate,’ were also messages that baffled the customer service department.
It became real today when customers brought along old, unwanted or broken piece of tech to be recycled – everything from broken cables to power banks were traded in for food.
Lucky customers bagged a £5 Cash for Trash voucher, as well as a choice of the two Indian delicacies.
Dan Rubel, Brand and Marketing Director at Currys, explains the inspiration behind this unique offering: ‘This idea started as an April Fool’s joke, but the reaction from colleagues and customers has been surprisingly positive, so we decided why not try it for real.

‘We hope a yummy curry will be an added incentive alongside the usual £5 Cash for Trash voucher, something we already offer across the UK every day.’
The Cash for Trash initiative, which is available all year round, rewards shoppers for recycling their old and unused tech and is part of Currys ongoing commitment to tackling e-waste.
Whether the tech was bought in store or not, shoppers can simply bring their item with them to any store and Currys will take it away to be reused or recycled and provide a £5 voucher (minimum £25 spend to redeem) to put towards their next tech purchase in return.
Surprisingly, this isn’t the first April Fools Day joke that customers begged to be real.
Aldi was met with an unexpected response to their chosen prank as customers demanded they see the proposed item on shelves.
The supermarket teased a new dessert for their range – characteristically imitating a big brand.
Much like Cuthbert the Caterpillar chocolate cake being similar to Marks & Spencer’s Colin, this new proposition bore resemblance to high-end ice cream brand Häagen-Dazs.
Freezers in an Aldi near you were supposedly going to be seeing a Specially Selected Häggis-Dazs ice cream appearing.
Noticing the date, commenters were not fooled by the stunt.
However, they did say: ‘Nevermind April fool.. Make it happen…’ and ‘Haggis we’re on board with this!…’
