In an exclusive chat with ETimes, Jeethu Joseph shared his candid thoughts on the subject of remakes, particularly expressing his lack of enthusiasm for dubbed movies. He emphasised a preference for the multilingual approach, where each actor speaks in different languages, over the practice of dubbing.

“I cannot enjoy a dubbed film because the experience of hearing Malayalam when the actor is clearly speaking in Hindi looks funny,” Jeethu Joseph remarked, highlighting the awkwardness he perceives in the mismatch between language and dialogue. He argued that while dubbed films may excel in financial terms, they often fail to truly connect with the audience, resulting in a suboptimal viewing experience.

Drawing parallels with Hollywood films dubbed into Malayalam, the director said, “Look at the Hollywood films that get dubbed into Malayalam. Those might work well when it comes to earning money, but they won’t really connect with the audience, and the experience of watching the film is far from ideal.”

Reflecting on ‘Baahubali,’ he noted, “In the case of ‘Baahubali’, since it was a visual treat, watching its dubbed version would have been okay. But even then, I preferred to watch in Telugu with English subtitles, which gave me a wholesome experience. There is a charm to watching a film in its original language.”

On the professional front, Jeethu Joseph’s recent directorial venture was the courtroom drama ‘Neru,’ featuring Mohanlal in the lead role.
