Consumers buy more for the first time than before the corona crisis

Consumers spent more in July than before the corona crisis for the first time. More money was spent in particular on services such as hairdressing, restaurants, cinemas and telephone and internet subscriptions, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics. Clothes and shoes were also bought more.

During the corona crisis, consumers spent much less for months, partly because shops, restaurants and cinemas were closed and partly because they wanted to keep money on hand. At its lowest point, there was a contraction in consumption of more than 17 percent. The fact that less was spent led to the Dutch economy entering a recession.

Since the corona measures were relaxed in April, consumers have started to spend more every month. In July, the increase was 4.8 percent compared to July the year before, after new easing measures were implemented at the end of June. The mouth cap obligation was canceled in many places and catering was allowed to stay open longer.

Compared to July 2019, 2.1 percent more was spent. The online stores are also noticing the relaxation. During the lockdown, online stores grew by 70 percent in some months. In July, growth had fallen to 11 percent.
