CONFIRMED: Pirates promote teenage star to the first team

The DStv Premiership is expected to resume on 16 February when SuperSport host Stellenbosch, while a day later Orlando Pirates will return to action against Mamelodi Sundowns.

As some local teams welcome back Afcon stars, it’s notable that Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge coach Joseph Makhanya has confirmed that teenage star Jabulani Mokone has been spending time with the senior team.

Pirates promote from within

The talented defender featured for the Carling Black Label All Star team in January, and according to iDiski Times, his consistently impressive performances have now resulted in a first team call-up.

“He is spending time with first team,” Makhanya was quoted as saying. “We feeling like he has done enough to be given a chance at first team so we hoping that he will continue learning so that he can be a better player.

“So yes he has been promoted.”

Delay in league restart

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed it has postponed all mid-week fixtures due to Bafana Bafana’s late arrival from Cote D’Ivoire.

The DStv Premiership season was set to resume on Tuesday, but Bafana only return to the country on Wednesday, with the likes of Sundowns needing to reintroduce as many as 10 players who featured at Afcon.

As a result, the league season will only kick off again this weekend.
