The ‘Rise of the condom emoji!’ campaign will be launched on Saturday 12 February during the foundation’s outdoor event in the Bijlmermeer in Amsterdam, where, among other things, free condoms are handed out. International Condom Day (ICD) is an informal holiday, usually combined with Valentine’s Day, to promote safe sex and encourage people to use condoms in a fun and creative way.

Emojis are now commonplace in sexually explicit conversations on social media. People use everything from aubergines and peaches to bananas and tacos and everything in between. That’s why AHF thinks the world needs a condom emoji. This is also reflected in some disturbing statistics: an estimated 1 million people worldwide get a sexually transmitted infection (STD) every day and there are still 1.5 million new HIV infections each year worldwide. In the Netherlands, too, thousands of people get an STI every year and hundreds of new HIV infections are added.
“It’s time we dropped the stigma surrounding condoms and made it easier to communicate about safer sex. Introducing a condom emoji to all digital platforms would be a fun and creative way to do that. We need to speak the language that speaks to young people most at risk,” said AHF Chief of Global Advocacy and Policy Terri Ford. In addition, the corona pandemic continues to create even more barriers to access to condoms for millions of people worldwide. Governments and public health agencies should make access to free or affordable condoms their top priority as it is the most affordable way to prevent HIV, other STIs and unplanned pregnancies.”
International Condom Day
AHF is holding events around International Condom Day in 45 countries this weekend. In the Netherlands, this will take place on Saturday 12 February from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ganzenhoef Market in Amsterdam. Employees will hand out free condoms there and you can have yourself tested for HIV free of charge and confidentially in the AHF test bus. Drinks and snacks are served, there are fun educational games for the public, live African music and dancing. The foundation also provides balloons and informative leaflets. Everyone is welcome!
