‘Complete fraud’: Andrew Giles blasts Peter Dutton after High Court’s detainee decision
Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has blasted Peter Dutton after the High Court’s detainee decision, branding the Opposition leader a “complete fraud” and accusing him of undermining the integrity of Australia’s migration system.
The government will not have to release up to 170 asylum seekers from detention whose lack of cooperation is a factor in why they can’t be deported.
The High Court rejected a challenge by an Iranian refugee known by the pseudonym ASF17, who argued he had no reasonable prospect of deportation because if he were to be sent back to Iran, he could face prosecution.
“I’m uninterested in almost anything Peter Dutton says. What he is determined to do is be a commentator rather than an actor,” Mr Giles said during a media conference.
“What Peter Dutton has shown over the last six months is a failure to reflect on his failures in his time in the Immigration and Home Affairs portfolio where his set-and-forget attitude to immigration detention and so many other aspects of his responsibilities have let Australians down, as three damning reports have said.”
