Comentario. ‘Star Wars’ siempre ha sido política. ‘Andor’ se convirtió en una serie de televisión obligada

A pesar de lo que algunas personas, y al menos una gran empresa de medios, puedan hacerte creer, “Star Wars” siempre ha sido política.

“Es un período de guerra civil”, explica el garabato inicial de la ópera espacial de George Lucas de 1977, ahora conocida formalmente como “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope”. La trilogía original de películas continúa mostrando cómo un granjero con poderes especiales, un contrabandista brusco pero leal y una princesa valiente y capaz logran lo aparentemente imposible y ayudan a una rebelde rebelde a acabar con un régimen autoritario galáctico.

“Andor”, la serie de Disney+ que concluye su primera temporada el miércoles, cuenta la historia de cómo Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) se transforma de un ladrón descontento y egocéntrico a un luchador de resistencia comprometido dispuesto a morir por la causa. Evitando muchos de los tropos familiares y escenarios asociados con la franquicia, la serie ha llevado la narración de “Star Wars” a nuevas alturas.

En el papel, “Andor” es una tarifa estándar de Disney+ que los cautelosos de las franquicias podrían no considerar particularmente convincentes. Es una serie de precuelas de “Rogue One”(2016), en sí misma una precuela ambientada inmediatamente antes de los eventos de “A New Hope”. A diferencia de la serie de películas principal conocida como Skywalker Saga, “Rogue One” no se enfoca en ningún Jedi o Elegido con el peso de la galaxia sobre sus hombros. En cambio, cuenta la historia de un equipo de rebeldes que se embarcan en una misión rebelde para robar los esquemas de la Estrella de la Muerte para mantener viva la esperanza de la Rebelión de derrotar al Imperio Galáctico.

Jedi, Sith y la Fuerza están igualmente ausentes en “Andor”. Es la primera historia de “Star Wars” que toma tiempo para describir cómo es la vida de la gente común que vive bajo el gobierno imperial y qué los lleva a aceptar o resistir el régimen fascista cada vez más opresivo. El programa es un cuestionamiento del poder y la moralidad más allá de la lucha simplificada (aunque innegablemente emocionante) entre el Lado de la Luz y el Lado Oscuro.

Esto no es tan sorprendente cuando miras los créditos de “Andor”. El showrunner Tony Gilroy, quien también trabajó en “Rogue One”, es mejor conocido por su trabajo en “Michael Clayton” (2007) y la serie de películas “Bourne”. El equipo de guionistas también incluye al creador de “House of Cards”Beau Willimon, y al escritor y productor de “The Americans“ Stephen Schiff. Tampoco es ningún secreto que Lucas se inspiró en la historia y los regímenes autoritarios de la vida real para desarrollar “Star Wars”. Pero debido a que las películas también están destinadas a ser accesibles para los niños, algunas de las políticas se diluyen, hasta el punto de que algunos fanáticos tóxicos mal informados no se dan cuenta o no les importa que a veces se comportan de manera que los alinea con el lado oscuro.

“Andor”, sin embargo, presenta la galaxia muy, muy lejana como una formada por muchos tonos diferentes de gris, subrayados por su elenco estelar. Los héroes de lo que eventualmente se convertirá en la Alianza Rebelde a veces toman decisiones moralmente sospechosas. Y como en cualquier lugar de trabajo, la ambición y la política de la oficina afectan a los empleados del Imperio Galáctico, quienes, como individuos, tienden a ser defectuosos en lugar de simplemente malvados. Es un matiz que es difícil de transmitir a través de la rígida dicotomía de Jedi y Sith.

Pero la ausencia de Jedi y la Fuerza no significa que “Andor” no sea una buena historia de “Star Wars”. La construcción del mundo de la serie ha sido impresionante, introduciendo nuevos planetas, costumbres y alimentos (azules). Si bien la serie ha presentado predominantemente personajes humanoides estándar en lugar de especies alienígenas visualmente más distintas, no han estado completamente ausentes. “Andor” también presenta al encantador droide cuadrado B2EMO, que de vez en cuando tartamudea.

Los fanáticos de “Star Wars” con ojos de águila habrán notado los huevos de Pascua de “Andor”, particularmente en la tienda de antigüedades que sirve como fachada para las reuniones secretas de los rebeldes. Y aunque “Andor” no requiere que la audiencia tenga ningún conocimiento real de “Star Wars” fuera de la serie, aquellos que hayan visto “Rogue One” captarán momentos que presagian el futuro de Andor o agregarán contexto adicional a los eventos de la película. La serie también presenta rostros familiares de “Rogue One” además de Andor en Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), una senadora que libra una lucha secreta contra el Imperio, y el insurgente Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker).

Lo que “Andor” ha demostrado es que “Star Wars” es maleable. Merece espacio para crecer en géneros adaptados a la televisión y temas adaptados a audiencias adultas, no solo traducir las convenciones de la saga cinematográfica central en episodios de una hora.

Antes de “Andor”, los espectáculos de acción en vivo de “Star Wars” tendían a sumergirse en el pozo de la nostalgia por sus historias. Y destacados como “The Mandalorian” han demostrado que esta reverencia por “Star Wars” se puede aprovechar para crear una historia nueva y convincente y dar la bienvenida a nuevos fanáticos. Pero a pesar de lo potentes que pueden ser esos sentimientos, también son limitados y volátiles. La nostalgia se basa en los recuerdos personales de “Star Wars” de las personas para tener éxito. Reformular aspectos de la tradición existente puede ser significativo para algunos mientras aliena a otros. Peor aún, podría conducir a una repetición aburrida. Solo mire la respuesta a la trilogía secuela.

“Andor” es tanto un desafío a esa nostalgia como a la creencia de que “Star Wars” es, o alguna vez fue, apolítica.
