The WHL announced yesterday that Columbus prospect Denton Mateychuk has won the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy for being the league’s top defenseman.
Mateychuk had a stellar year for Moose Jaw. Playing in 52 games, he scored 17 goals and had 75 points. In 17 WHL playoff games, Mateychuk has 8 goals and 27 points and will have a chance to add to that total in the WHL final.
Moose Jaw finished their series with the Saskatoon Blades last night by beating them 3-2 in OT and taking the series 4-3. The Warriors will now go on to play the Portland Winterhawks in the WHL final.
Columbus Blue Jackets fans cannot wait to see Mateychuk in Union Blue, preferably next season. But Mateychuk will undoubtedly start in the AHL unless the Jackets make a few moves to clear the way for the young star.
Will the new GM let the young kids play and develop? We shall see.
