Collie’s Lake Kepwari transformed from open-cut mine to water sports recreation hub

No need for filters, Sandgropers. Western Australia’s latest Insta-worthy tourism hotspot doesn’t need one.

Lake Kepwari was an open-cut mine for almost 30 years that has since undergone a stunning transformation.

Situated 10km south-east of Collie, the reservoir is swiftly becoming a favourite among water sports enthusiasts with canoeing, waterskiing, swimming and fishing now possible at the site the lake.

The mine’s operations officially came to a close in 1996, after which time the void left was filled with water from the Collie River.

The resulting waterbody — now known as Lake “Kepwari”, which is Noongar for “playing in water” — has a whopping 5.4km perimeter and is 65m at its deepest point.

Recent developments including a swim beach, picnic areas, a campground, toilets, dual lane boat ramp and jetty, and abundant car and boat trailer parking have turned the area into a water sports landmark.

While the lake was only officially opened by Premier Mark McGowan last December, it has already received a bounty of positive feedback.

“Lake Kepwari is a stunning location. The camp sites there are fairly new so are in really good condition … Beautiful location would definitely recommend,” wrote one Tripadvisor user.

“Well worth the trip,” wrote another, while a third pleased to find the lake was dog friendly added the inland destination also surprisingly offered “magic sunsets”.

The reservoir is the latest abandoned mine to be rehabilitated to become a recreation hub, following closely in the footsteps of the highly Instagrammable Black Diamond Lake — also near Collie.

The idyllic swimming hole quickly went viral on social media for its otherworldly blue waters, with tourists travelling far and wide to see it for themselves.

Lake Kepwari is about a 2.5hr drive from Perth’s CBD via the Kwinana Freeway. For more information or to book a campsite, head to Parks and Wildlife Service.
