college football reveals new playoff format for 2024 season

A new, expanded College Football Playoff was put in place that broadened the postseason field from four to 12 teams, but since the most recent wave of conference realignment completely changed the structure of the sport, a new format was needed once again.

Now, the College Football Playoff has announced it will debut the new “5+7 model” include the five highest-ranked conference champions, plus the next seven highest-ranked at-large teams as chosen by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.

This plan replaces the initial design that included the so-called 6+6 model, featuring the six highest-ranked conference champions and the six other highest-ranked at-large teams.

But the demise of the Pac-12 in the face of realignment destroyed the idea of the Power Five, and thus the ability of that league to decide a football champion.

“This is a very logical adjustment for the College Football Playoff based on the evolution of our conference structures since the board first adopted this new format in September 2022,” CFP board of managers chairman Mark Keenum said.

He added: “I know this change will also be well received by student-athletes, coaches, and fans. We all will be pleased to see this new format come to life on the field this postseason.”
