Clear language Lewis Hamilton about situation in Saudi Arabia: ‘It is not my choice to race here’

Hamilton continued: ,,There have to be changes here. That’s why we need to create awareness for that when we’re here. And that’s why I wore the rainbow helmet in Qatar and will wear those next two races.”

Amnesty International already hoped that drivers like Hamilton and Max Verstappen would speak out about the abuses in a country like Saudi Arabia. “The human rights situation is a major problem in Saudi Arabia, it is also sensitive,” said Floor Beuming on behalf of the human rights organization. She also indicated that Verstappen has received a letter from the Dutch branch of Amnesty to be informed about the situation. However, there has been no response from Verstappen yet.

I know that people are deeply affected by the rules and the regime here. It feels like a duty to draw attention to this too

Lewis Hamilton

It is the first time that the Formula 1 circus has settled in Jeddah. According to Amnesty International, the Saudi authorities are trying to improve the image of their country with the Grand Prix. “Countries like Saudi Arabia are very sensitive when it comes to their international reputation,” said Dagmar Oudshoorn, director of Amnesty International Netherlands. ,,That’s why they want to receive such an international spectacle as Formula 1. This is about prestige and image.”

Hamilton says he will always continue to fight against inequality ,,I know that people are deeply affected by the rules and the regime here. Just like there are still women in prison for driving here. It feels like a duty to draw attention to this as well.”

Verstappen will later speak to the press.
