City tram stops to close for rail replacement work
Supertram was opened in 1994 with a tram-train extension covering parts of Rotherham opening in 2018
No trams will stop in Sheffield city centre during an 11-day rail replacement project taking place later this month.
During the work, set to run from 24 May to 3 June, no services will be able to operate between Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge and University.
Supertram said the multi-million pound project would “future-proof and extend the lifespan of the network”.
A revised timetable and replacement transport will be in operation.
During the work, being carried out by contractor VolkerRail, the West Street, City Hall, Cathedral, Castle Square and Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge tram stops will not be served.
The stop at Netherthorpe Road will also be closed while the tram shelters are replaced.
Supertram was brought back under public control earlier this year after 27 years of being run privately.
Melanie Corcoran, executive director of transport at the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, said the works were “essential” to extend the lifespan of the Supertram network.
“By replacing the track we’re making sure the region’s tram network can continue to safely provide its popular service for generations to come,” she said.
