Chris Simms on Jets' QB Jordan Travis - 'The Kid Can Play!'

The New York Jets had one eye on the future in the draft as the franchise selected Florida State’s Jordan Travis in the fifth round, and he will now serve as QB3 behind Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor.

In what is perhaps one of the best scenarios a rookie can walk into, Travis, who is still rehabbing his horror ankle injury he sustained last season, gets to sit and learn off two veteran quarterbacks without the pressure Zach Wilson faced with having to come in and save the franchise.

For NBC’s Chris Simms, the Jets were smart in selecting Travis and even went as far as saying that, eventually, he could be a starting quarterback in the Big Apple.

“The kid can play, and I think where it is smart is that you got a guy like if Tyrod Taylor is just a one-year backup type of thing, you got Jordan Travis there to be backup, maybe starter type of guy here for a long time in New York,” Simms said on NFL on NBC.

With Travis’ rookie season likely to be red-shirted, he will be able to observe veteran pros at work.

Rodgers, in particular, will be a source of immense value for Travis, and so will Taylor, but in the four-time MVP winner, Travis will be able to soak in everything Rodgers has to offer.

It worked out well for Jordan Love in Green Bay, and depending on how long Rodgers wants to play football, when the time does come to hand over the keys to Travis, perhaps the Jets, like the Packers, will have a very competent quarterback.

Of course, that is looking a little far into the future, but with Travis’ selection, that is where the Jets’ minds likely were.

As the saying goes, you draft a quarterback when you don’t need one. New York didn’t need Travis, but it hopes that when the time comes that it does, he will be able to step in and lead the franchise for the foreseeable future.
