Rain is set to return and bring an end to the current spell of glorious weather, but there is hope that the sunshine will return in time for the forthcoming May Bank Holiday weekend.
Ireland has been as hot as Malaga in recent days, and the sunny weather looks likely to continue in most areas as the week progresses.
However, that’s likely to change on Thursday, when outbreaks of rainfall will spread across the country from the west. A couple of cloudy, dull days will ensue, and the weekend is looking unsettled, damp and blustery.
Don’t put the sunscreen away just yet, however, as there are tentative signs that an area of high pressure could return for the bank holiday weekend, bringing with it a return of the warm, dry weather that the country has enjoyed in the past few days.
Weather models currently show an area of high pressure returning for the bank holiday weekend
Weather expert Alan O’Reilly cautioned that this was still “very far away” in meteorological terms and therefore subject to change, but offers sun worshippers “some hope” as the current spell nears an end.
Here’s the latest forecast from Met Éireann for the week ahead:
Tuesday
A cloudy start this morning with some light patchy drizzle but this will clear away with sunny spells developing by late morning. Staying largely dry and sunny into the afternoon and evening with a light northerly breeze and highs of 11 to 16 degrees.
Rather clear and dry tonight but it will be chilly in that northerly breeze. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees with some mist and fog patches overnight too.
Wednesday
A mix of cloudy periods and sunny spells in the morning but the cloud will continue to build through the afternoon. It will stay largely dry too in a light northerly breeze and highs of 11 to 15 degrees.
Becoming a little cloudy in the west and north later in the night with some light patchy rain developing too. Clear spells elsewhere and staying mostly dry too. Winds will fall light overnight with lowest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees with some mist patches also.
Thursday
Cloudy with outbreaks of rain pushing in across western and northern counties early in the morning. Staying dryer elsewhere until the afternoon before the rain becomes more widespread. Light winds and perhaps a little cooler than recently with highs of 9 to 13 degrees.
Rather cloudy with outbreaks of rain on Thursday night, becoming more persistent across southern counties. Winds will fall light too with lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees.
Friday
Cloudy and dull with rain across the southern half of the country. Some dry spells further north in a northerly breeze. Highs of 8 to 11 degrees, coolest in the south.
Saturday and Sunday
Current indications would suggest a rather unsettled weekend with plenty of cloud and limited sunny spells. Outbreaks of rain are likely especially across southern counties with some blustery winds there too. Highs struggling too at just 8 to 12 degrees.
