CES 2022: What's happening with the next Consumer Electronics Show?

(Pocket-lint) – The biggest tech event in the calendar, CES – the Consumer Electronics Show – rolls around each and every January, bringing heaps of new announcements and product launches.

While the 2021 event was rather different – like many shows and launches since early 2020 – the organiser of the show, the US Consumer Electronics Association (CTA), has announced a full return to Las Vegas for CES 2022, though there will be an online element as well.

The CTA says that it will be reviewing guidelines for safety measures from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in addition to state and local guidelines ahead of the CES 2022 event.

When is CES 2022?

CES 2022 will start on Wednesday 5 January through to Saturday 8 January, 2022. Expect most of the announcements to take place on Monday and Tuesday 3-4 January as they’re the press, analyst and media days.

However, as we’ve seen before, some manufacturers will be holding their own events and these will fall outside of the official CES events.

The CTA says that over 1,000 companies have committed to showcasing technologies in Las Vegas and companies are continuing to sign up.

Attendees can expect to see global brands including Amazon, AMD, AT&T, Daimler AG, Dell, Google, Hyundai, IBM, Intel, Lenovo, LG Electronics, Panasonic, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics and Sony.

“We’re thrilled to return to Las Vegas – home to CES for more than 40 years – and look forward to seeing many new and returning faces,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the CTA. “Hundreds of executives have told us how much they need CES to meet new and existing customers, find partners, reach media and discover innovation.”

Eureka Park will return with startups representing countries around the world, including large delegations from France, Italy, the Netherlands and South Korea.

The CES anchor desk, which debuted at the virtual CES 2021, will be in Las Vegas to connect digital audiences with exhibitors, conference sessions, keynotes and product announcements from the live event.

We’ll be updating this feature up to and throughout the 2022 show, so you can see all the announcements that actually matter.

Who attends CES?

CES is an industry event so, unlike IFA in Berlin, the public can’t attend. But anyone connected to the consumer electronics industry can apply for a pass. In 2019 over 182,000 people attended, which is the show’s capacity. That included 69,000 exhibitors (across more than 4,000 represented companies) and almost 7,000 members of the media.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

For

  • Accurate fitness tracking
  • Two-day battery
  • Fluid interface

Against

  • Design is relatively plain
  • Only works with Android

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 isn’t just the top pick among Wear OS smartwatches; for anybody with an Android device, this is the best overall selection, in our view.

It runs Wear OS 3, thanks to that partnership with Google we alluded to above, and, though it is still a very Tizen-like experience, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Whether it’s the Galaxy Watch 4 or the more smart-looking Classic model, you’re getting an excellent smartwatch and fitness tracker experience.

They’re accurate in tracking, more powerful than predecessors and feature slimmer designs, meaning they’re more comfortable to wear over long periods. It’s living proof of how good Wear OS can be, given the right attention, with features like watch faces, interactive notifications, payments and music all shining.

Our only real gripe is that the regular version, although cheaper, is quite plain on the design front. Neither model will work with iPhone, as well, which makes them purely for Android phone users.

Fossil Gen 6

For

  • Fast and responsive
  • Clean, crisp design
  • Affordable

Against

  • Wear OS 3 is coming in 2022
  • Fitness tracking is basic
  • GPS inaccuracies

As you would expect from the latest generation of Fossil’s smartwatch line, the Gen 6 represents a very solid step forward compared to previous models. It’s responsive, thanks to the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ chip under the hood, attractive on the wrist and available at a fairly reasonable price.

It’s a true smartwatch-first experience, and it’s a great pick, but it’s also not entirely complete just yet. Wear OS 3 is coming in 2022, but its omission means that there’s plenty of room for the comparatively barebones experience to grow.

We’d also steer you away from this one if you’re looking for a rounded fitness tracking experience. The GPS accuracy is mixed, to say the least, and activity modes are lacking.

TicWatch E3

For

  • Neat design
  • Packed with features
  • Super price tag

Against

  • Battery life isn’t the best
  • Wear OS 3 not arriving until 2022
  • Mobvoi companion app is clunky

If you want a more basic TicWatch model, the E3 provides a beautifully simple design, a smart, zippy mix of Mobvoi and Google software and some really nice fitness and health features.

It’s not quite got the smartwatch capabilities of other models on this list, but it’s an ideal candidate for those who want a Wear OS smartwatch that can really hold its own on the tracking front. You’ll likely receive the odd sensor hiccup, but this, and the middling battery life, are our only real gripes with the TicWatch E3.

There may be better mid-range options that eventually receive the Wear OS 3 update, but this is a very solid option for the time being – and for a very reasonable price, too.

TicWatch Pro 3

For

  • Relatively slim and light design
  • Speedy performance
  • Superb battery life

Against

  • Heart rate is hit and miss
  • Sports tracking isn’t elite
  • Wear OS 3 may not be available until 2022

Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 steers the company’s premier smartwatch line back in the right direction, bolstering a slimmer, lighter design and a snappy performance boost.

It features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100 under the hood, which helps power the refreshed UI for even longer – expect three days of full use and the option of 45 days in a stripped-back mode.

Our only concern is that it’s still not a bonafide watch for exercisers, but, for those who want a stylish Wear OS watch with all the basics, this is definitely one to consider.

We should also mention that this is one of the few already-released watches set to receive the Wear OS 3 update. This won’t be landing until 2022, but, in the bigger picture, it’s still a big positive that keeps this watch relevant in the long term.

Tag Heuer Connected

For

  • Outstanding build quality
  • Intuitive Tag Heuer Sports app

Against

  • Won’t receive Wear OS 3
  • Exceptionally pricey

There’s no escaping the price tag attached to Tag Heuer’s premium smartwatch, but this has always been a line more focused on style over substance.

Wear OS does its best to match the superb build quality and luxury feel of the latest Tag smartwatch, and, thanks to Qualcomm’s Wear 3100 processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB of storage, it’s a comfortably smooth experience.

If you crave the best-looking smartwatch on the market, this is the pick, but we’d look elsewhere if you just want a better blend of affordability, style and functionality.

Also, keep in mind that this model won’t receive the Wear OS 3 update, so it’s likely to become fairly outdated over the next few years.

What to expect from CES 2022

There will be a full run of press conferences, both in person and virtual and we’re expecting a full line-up of new product launches to go along with those. Traditionally, CES sees the launch of new televisions, with flagship models revealed, alongside new technology that’s going to drive the industry through the year.

Hyundai at CES 2022

  • 4 Jan, 3pm PST

Hyundai is hosting a press conference at CES 2022. In recent years, there’s been a marked growth in automotive brands at the show. It’s not clear what Hyundai will be talking about, but hopefully we’ll hear more about future plans for the Ioniq EV brand.

LG at CES 2022

  • 4 Jan, 8am PST

LG will be holding a press conference and as is typical, will be one of the first on the agenda. There will also be a physical and virtual exhibition. We’re expecting updates across LG’s range of consumer devices and white goods. The introduction of a new flagship OLED TV will likely be the headline.

Panasonic at CES 2022

  • 4 Jan, 10am PST

Panasonic is hosting a press conference at CES and we’re likely to see teh focus again be on television.

Qualcomm at CES 2022

  • 4 Jan, 11am PST

With Qualcomm having hardware in many technology devices, CES is often a core destination for all things connected. Although Qualcomm announces its big moves at Snapdragon Summit, we’re sure there will be plenty more to get excited about in Vegas.

Samsung at CES 2022

Samsung usually has one of the biggest press conferences at CES, with a huge range of introductions. Rumours say that Samsung will be introducing QD-OLED – Quantum Dot OLED – a panel technology designed to help Samsung compete with high-end OLED sets, the type we see from LG.

Sony at CES 2022

  • 4 Jan, 5pm PST

Sony usually rounds out the first media day at CES and we’re expecting again to see advances in television.
