Hugo Marques: People now believe PSL isn’t just about Sundowns
Former Cape Town City FC goalkeeper Hugo Marques has highlighted the impact of Bafana Bafana’s recent performance on the PSL. The Angolan said the league has earned more respect after South Africa’s decent showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals.
Marques on PSL standard versus Bafana Bafana’s performance
The ex-Cape Town City FC keeper told The South African that people now believe the PSL is not just about Mamelodi Sundowns. The 2021-2022 DStv Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season said, previously, fans in Angola underrated the PSL. He said they thought the only worthwhile team in South Africa were the Tshwane giants. Masandawana players dominated Bafana Bafana’s squad which competed at the Ivory Coast tournament. However, players from other teams such as Orlando Pirates’ Evidence Makgopa also impressed at the Afcon finals.
What Marques said about PSL’s quality
Coach Rulani Mokwena’s side has dominated the PSL, winning the DStv Premiership championship for six consecutive seasons. Given this, the ex-Cape Town City FC star said: “I hope they can see [through Bafana Bafana] the quality that the DStv Premiership has. Even with the easy wins of Sundowns of the league titles, now the people trust me.” The former Cape Town City custodian said it was difficult convincing people that Mzansi had good players from other clubs.
The veteran keeper established himself while at the Mother City-based team. He made 34 appearances in the 2021-2022 campaign to earn the best keeper accolade. However, Marques returned to Angola last year after asking Cape Town City FC’s management to release him from his contract. He eventually rejoined Angola’s Girabola league side Petro de Luanda FC.
The Angolan’s special praise for Ronwen Williams
The Angolan has since saluted Bafana Bafana keeper Ronwen Williams for his heroics at the 2023 Afcon. The ex-Cape Town City FC man said: “Right now, Williams is the best goalkeeper on the continent. He deserves all the good things. He was one of the best players of the tournament.”
Recoup of Bafana Bafana’s Afcon exploits
The former SuperSport United man stopped a record four post-match penalties in the 2-1 win over Cape Verde to help South Africa reach the semifinals. The men for Hugo Broos went on to lose on post-match penalties to Nigeria after a one-all draw in regulation time of the semifinal. However, Williams redeemed himself in the next game. He stopped another post-match penalty as the 1996 champions saw off the Democratic Republic of Congo 6-5 to claim 2023 Afcon bronze medal.
