‘not puppets’: taiwan’s strongly-worded response to china’s criticism on joseph wu interview with indian media

Taiwan has strongly hit out at China over its criticism on the former’s Foreign Minister’s interview to an Indian media channel. The Chinese embassy in India had allegeed that Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu interview “provided platform for him to advocate ‘Taiwan independence'”. In response, Taipei said that India and Taiwan are democracies with free and vibrant presses and “not its puppets”.

It may be noted that India follows the ‘One China policy’ and does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taipei.

China has claimed that the interview “seriously violated the one-China principle, and is totally unacceptable”.

The statement from the Chinese embassy read: “On 29th February 2024, certain Indian TV broadcasted an interview with the head of Taiwan’s foreign affairs office Joseph Wu, which provided platform for him to advocate ‘Taiwan independence’ and disseminate false information. It seriously violated the one-China principle, and is totally unacceptable.”

“There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China,” read the statement, according to India Today

In response, Taipei said that “neither India nor Taiwan is part of the PRC [People’s Republic of China] and we’re not its puppets”. We’re both democracies with free and vibrant presses that can’t be dictated to.”

Taiwan asked China to worry about its “economic slump, not bully its neighbours”.
