Carberry's ER reopens with help from 3 doctors
A warm welcome for new doctors. I’m just going to cut to the chase. We’re here to announce the reopening of the Carberry Emergency department. The town’s ER closed last August when Carberry’s 2 remaining doctors left. It was election time in Manitoba and Wabcano made a promise. We would ensure that there’s a doctor coming back to Carberry, but as Premier Canoe found, it was easier said than done. How little did I know of the challenge? That communities like yours face when it comes to health care, They found three doctors. I was pretty impressed how committed the community was to to attracting a physician here. When I was caught on to serve, I feel the least I could do is to help. The town is showing its appreciation. I told the minister if this could happen, there would be a hug. And homemade cookies. So excuse me. Other rural communities are probably wondering if they are getting any doctors, but the premier wasn’t making any commitments on any of that today. Canoe did say his government would have to roll up their sleeves. We have to show up and put in the same level of effort as the local leadership. Last year, four rural ERS closed, including Carberries. The House minister says staffing up rural hospitals is possible. It takes a little bit of work, little elbow grease, and dedicated community folks like Loretto who will give you hugs. While Carberry appreciates these doctors, the three physicians are only here on a part time basis. They’ll staff the hospital on a rotation. Residents hope to find doctors that stay here for years. It’s a good starting point. We just need doctors now, permanently in our clinic. She’s doing it for Carberry’s future Ian phrase. CBC News, Carberry.
