Asda in hot water over change to UK stores and shoppers say ‘big mistake’

Asda has come under fire for a UK-wide change to stores – as shoppers rage it’s a “mistake”. Shoppers have expressed their anger at the supermarket’s plans to go cashless in nearly 100 kiosks as Asda petrol stations axe manned tills.

The chain explained the move, saying that 90 per cent of transactions are paid for via debit or credit card. An Asda spokesperson said: “As more than 90 percent of all payments on our superstore forecourts are made via card or a contactless device, the colleagues who worked on these sites are moving into the store so they can better serve our customers. These conversions began in December and we expect to complete the changeover later in 2024.”

One shopper fumed: “The powers that rule over us want everything on line that way they can keep track on you and every penny you have. Closed all the banks so that your money is under their control. There will be no under the counter cash jobs. And if the system breaks down you cannot get to your money. You can’t walk into a bank and get things sorted out, it’ll be just a voice on the other end of a phone.”

Ed moaned: “This was fine until the pay at the pump systems started blocking £100 out of your account regardless of how much fuel you take. Most of the time it’s fine and is corrected by the time you start your engine again but I have had it take more than a day for it to correct once and it was a real pain.”

Sue said: “I work in social care supporting people in households of two or more and they all contribute an equal cash sum towards the shopping. In many cases this also enables them to understand the value of items and budgeting . Handling their own personal cash is important too .”

Alan fumed: “What a massive mistake. The last time I went to ASDA Ieft a full trolley of shopping after, i don’t even know what to call them, “checkout staff” has to come to my checkout to swipe their card for the fourth time.”

“When consumers take their business to companies that offer a choice they’ll learn a lesson. Contactless/card payments incur fees for business which means they raise prices….” Rod said.
