SANRAL announces N2 road closures for blasting operations

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) issued a notice to road users regarding intermittent closures on the N2 between Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) and the Fish River Pass. These closures are due to blasting operations scheduled throughout this month.

Commencing on Monday, the blasting operations will persist until 26 February. SANRAL has outlined specific closure dates for motorists to take note of, including Thursday, 15 February, Monday, 19 February, Thursday, 22 February, and Monday, 26 February.

N2 closed for safety measures

During these closures, spanning from 3:00 to 18:00, the road will be inaccessible. This is to ensure safety measures are executed. It allows for the cleaning and securing of the existing N2 for public travel.

To mitigate disruptions, SANRAL has proposed alternative routes for motorists. Travelers heading westwards from East London or Qonce (formerly King William’s Town) towards Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) should take the R72 to Port Alfred and Kenton-on-Sea, proceed to Nanaga, and then join the N2 towards Gqeberha.

Conversely, travelers heading eastwards from Gqeberha to Qonce or East London can opt for an alternative route. They can follow the N2 to Nanaga, then turn onto the R72 towards Alexandria and Port Alfred before reaching East London.

Sanral Southern Region Manager urges planning amid N2 closure

Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL’s Southern Region Manager, urged motorists to plan their journeys accordingly.

“Motorists are requested to plan their trips accordingly, consider alternative routes and use caution when making use of the roads,” said Peterson.
