The Canadiens’ Cole Caufield says he feels refreshed and energized after an unexpected trip back home to Wisconsin.

Caufield and teammate Joel Armia were placed on the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list on Jan. 18 when the Canadiens were in Dallas. They spent five days in Dallas and then went to Wisconsin, since they weren’t allowed to cross the Canadian border again until Jan. 28.

“We really didn’t have many places to go or many options,” Caufield said after the Canadiens practised Monday afternoon at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard. “I knew that we could skate there, get on the ice and get some workouts in. For me it was kind of a no-brainer. I had to ask Joel if he wanted to come and he said yes. We had a good couple of days there, so it was fun.

“It was good just to refresh,” Caufield added. “I got to see the family a little bit, too. It was nice.”

Caufield grew up in Wisconsin and played two seasons for the University of Wisconsin Badgers. Last season, Caufield won the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in U.S. college hockey when he posted 30-22-52 totals in 31 games.

Things have not gone well for Caufield this season. The 21-year-old has 1-7-8 totals in 29 games with the Canadiens and is minus-15.

Heading into the season, Caufield was considered a favourite to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. But there are 558 players in the NHL — including 56 rookies — with more goals than Caufield this season.

Caufield said he wants to start with a clean slate when the Canadiens play the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night at the Bell Centre (7 p.m., TSN2, RDS, TSN 690 Radio, 98.5 FM).

“Put the past behind you and look forward to the games coming ahead,” he said. “You can only really focus on the next day. You can’t get too far ahead of yourself, so that’s kind of just the way I’ve been handling things.”

This has also been a tough season for Armia, who has 1-4-5 totals in 32 games after signing a four-year, US$13.6-million contract during the off-season.

“He loved it there,” Caufield said about Armia’s time in Wisconsin. “He had a good time. He told me he’s a Badger now. If he could go back (in the future), he would go there.”

Fighting for jobs

The Canadiens had 16 forwards at practice Monday and Caufield found himself on the fourth line with Armia and Laurent Dauphin.

“It’s hockey,” Caufield said about the fight for spots in the lineup with so many healthy bodies now. “You want to play the right way and produce. If you’re going to do that you’re going to be in the lineup. It’s a job, it’s a profession, and I think everybody knows that. You kind of just got to take it day by day and work as hard as you can when you have the opportunity. You just got to block out the outside noise, I guess.

“You guys can call it pressure,” he added. “I just call it competitiveness.”

Head coach Dominique Ducharme said he also plans to use Caufield on the power play, but the question moving forward is will he develop better on the fourth line with the Canadiens or playing on the first line with the AHL’s Laval Rocket.

The same could be said about Ryan Poehling, who found himself on the fifth line at practice Monday.

“I think it’s different for every player,” Ducharme said when asked about developing young players. “You need to take one guy and look at the situation and look at where he’s at, what he needs to be working on or getting better at or whatever the situation is with that player and then take that decision. Evaluate both sides and look at what can be done playing in Laval or what can be done playing here. Obviously, in the next few days we need some depth on defence (there were only six defencemen at practice). We’ll need to make some decisions up front. I’ll sit with (GM Kent Hughes) and (executive vice-president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton) and talk about that and we’ll see what we’re going to do.”

Price still not facing shots

Goalie Carey Price, who has yet to play a game this season after knee surgery last July to repair a torn meniscus, skated for about 20 minutes before practice Monday with assistant athletic therapist Matthew Romano. Price was in full gear, but didn’t take any shots.

“It’s always positive when a guy like him in his position can be on the ice, go on consecutive days and maybe ramp up on the intensity and go longer on the ice,” Ducharme said about Price. “It’s always good news, so hopefully it stays that way and he can keep moving forward.”

The first two times Price tried to resume skating after his knee surgery, he suffered setbacks and had to stop.

Tweaking the system?

The Canadiens have the worst record in the NHL (8-29-7) and are winless in their last six games (0-4-2).

They rank 31st in the NHL in offence, scoring an average of 2.23 goals per game, and rank 32nd (last) in defence, allowing an average of 3.91 goals per game.

Ducharme was asked if he plans to maybe tweak his system to get better execution from his players.

“We always look to tweak things and get things better, working on every phase of our game,” the coach said. “But what I find is there’s a few things that we need to do better. It’s more in the style of play than in the structure.

“You can be defending a different way, playing a different D-zone coverage, for example,” Ducharme added. “But when the puck is travelling and you have a chance to kill the play, to stall the play, to separate a guy from the puck, if you don’t do it — no matter what system you play — it’s going to crack. No matter what system you play, if you turn the puck (over) at the blue line to give a breakaway, there’s no way to defend it. If you don’t execute with the puck and you give it away, you give it to the other team in bad situations, there’s no way to defend it.

“I think in the last few games it’s more that than anything else. We need to obviously get better at everything, but it’s more into the execution. At one point, whatever system you play, you get in those situations where you need to be making the play and do your job … you don’t do it, it cracks.”
