Liverpool’s players looked dejected as they spurned a host of chances in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, yet Roy Keane believes the late point collected by Jurgen Klopp’s side could be crucial in their hunt for the Premier League title.
An 84th minute Mohamed Salah penalty gave Liverpool a draw in a game they dominated, with the visitors having 28 shots on goal on a day when they could have won by a wide margin.
Liverpool led at half-time through Luis Diaz’s goal, before an audacious long-range strike from Bruno Fernandes following a misplaced pass from Jarell Quansah gave United an unlikely leveller.
Then a stunning goal from Kobbie Mainoo gave United a lead in a game that could have been over long before the found a foothold, but there was to be a final twist in the tale as Liverpool found a way to come back after Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Harvey Elliott in the box and Salah converted the penalty.
The draw saw Liverpool surrender the two-point lead they had at the top of the table heading into this game, with Arsenal now taking over as Premier League leaders with just seven games left to play.
Yet despite Liverpool’s obvious disappointment, former United and Ireland captain Keane told Sky Sports that the draw could still help Klopp’ side win the title.
“For Liverpool, they should have won the game, but that point might be crucial come the end of the season,” said Keane.
“They were behind with five to 10 minutes to go at Old Trafford where it is never easy.
“I’m sure Jurgen Klopp will have mixed emotions. He will be delighted in general with the performance but they gifted United a way into the game.
“In the end, they clawed their way back for a draw and that could be vital at the end of the season.
“Overall, it was a mad mad game. Credit to both sets of players. They went for it. We saw four goals, honestly it was a mad game.”
Keane’s fellow studio pundit Jamie Redknapp suggested the draw was down to Liverpool’s negligence in front of goal.
“Man Utd will be delighted with a point but Liverpool on the hand, they should have been 3-0 up at half time,” said the former Liverpool midfielder.
“They had so many chances. They dominated the match.
“It’s certainly two points dropped. They will be furious because it is a game they had so much control in.
“At the end, they tried to muster something and it would have been a massive three points if they could have got it. But you can see in the faces of the players, they are dejected right now. it’s a game they should have won.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who admitted Klopp and his players may rue their lack of cutting edge at Old Trafford.
“Liverpool only have themselves to blame,” stated Carragher.
“They weren’t clinical enough when it really mattered. They should have put Man Utd to bed. It’s definitely two points dropped.
“Still, we’ve talked about a defeat not being terminal for Liverpool, a draw is a good result.
“There’s a long way to go in this title race.”
