Northern Territory set to repurpose Don Dale Youth Detention Centre

There are plans for the Northern Territory government to house female prisoners at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.

For the past nine years, the detention centre held Darwin’s young offenders.

Now it is said to be repurposed once the detainees are moved out into the new youth detention centre that is almost finished.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Eve Lawler said this is necessary as the prisons and watch-houses are “literally full”.

Darwin Barrister John Lawrence labelled the decision as “stupid” and typical of the people involved in a system that is “literally broken”.

Mr Lawrence added the centre is “an absolute dump”.
