SP picks 6 more nominees, fields Mulayam Singh Yadav’s nephew from Azamgarh
LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party on Saturday announced names of six more candidates for Lok Sabha elections. Dharmendra Yadav, nephew of party founder late Mulayam Singh Yadav, was declared party’s pick for Azamgarh seat. This put an end to speculations over SP chief Akhilesh Yadav contesting from the constituency, considered a safe bet for the party.
Dharmendra had contested 2022 Azamgarh Lok Sabha bypoll but lost to BJP’s Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirauha by a narrow margin of 8,000 votes.
However, Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali was also in the fray as a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate and finished third with 2.66 lakh votes. This time, Guddu Jamali has jumped ship to join SP.
A Pasmanda Muslim, Jamali has won the Mubarakpur assembly seat twice in the past on a BSP ticketMubarakpur is an assembly segment of Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency.
SP further fortified the Azamgarh seat by sending Guddu Jamali to the council along with party veteran and Mulayam’s close confidant Balram Yadav, a two-time MLA and MLC in his third term.
Balram’s son Sangram Yadav is in his second term as SP MLA from Atraulia — an assembly segment of Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat.
With such groundwork, the Azamgarh seat was being seen as a safe bet for the party and therefore, gave rise to speculations that Akhilesh Yadav could contest from the seat.
Azamgarh has been SP’s bastion and in the past, voters have elected Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav as their representatives in the Parliament.
Others in the list of candidates announced on Saturday include Dr Mahendra Nagar (Gautam Budh Nagar, Noida), Bheem Nishad (Sultanpur), Jitendra Dohre (Etawah), and Narayan Das Ahirwar (Jalaun). The party has also replaced its candidate on the Misrikh seat with Manoj Kumar Raghvanshi.
Apart from this latest list of six names, the party had earlier announced names of 16 candidates in the first list followed by another nine candidates in the second list. So far, the party has named 38 candidates and replaced one.
The party has till now spared 18 seats for INDIA bloc partners, including 17 for the Congress and one for Trinamool Congress.
