California Democrats slam Kevin McCarthy over reaction to FBI raid of Mar-a-Lago

california democrats slam kevin mccarthy over reaction to fbi raid of mar-a-lago

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of Calif., speaks on the House floor during debate at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021, in Washington.

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy was blasted by other members of California’s congressional delegation for the statement he released Monday following reports that former President Donald Trump’s Florida estate was raided by the FBI earlier that afternoon.

In his statement, McCarthy ordered U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to “preserve” documents and “clear” his calendar in preparation for an investigation Republicans will conduct into the U.S. Department of Justice should they retake the House during this year’s midterm elections.

“I’ve seen enough. The Department of Justice has reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization,” McCarthy said. “When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned.”

Other lawmakers representing California were quick to hit back.

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu (District 33) focused his critique on the fact that nobody — McCarthy included — knows what federal agents seized during their raid of Mar-a-Lago. The general consensus among political analysts (and one supported by unnamed sources in some reports) is that the raid was part of an already public investigation into whether documents, some of them top-secret, were taken to the Florida estate instead of being sent to the National Archives when Trump left office.

“You say you’ve ‘seen enough.’ Did you see the classified and unclassified documents that the FBI seized at Mar-a-Lago? No. So you have no idea what you are talking about,” Lieu said to McCarthy on Twitter. “Stop making stuff up. You are the leader of the minority party. Do better.”

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell (District 15) said that the raid was signed off on by a federal judge in Florida, and, like Lieu, emphasized that it’s still unclear what was taken by federal agents during the raid.

“It’s outrageous to threaten the Attorney General—especially about a criminal affidavit (signed by a judge) you have not seen and evidence (seized by law enforcement) you don’t know,” Swalwell said, also on Twitter. “This behavior is why you will never be Speaker.”

Although the GOP’s acquiescence to Trump is nothing new, it was notable just how strongly McCarthy and other top figures in the party responded to the FBI’s actions.

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik (the third-ranking Republican in the House) and Florida Sen. Rick Scott (the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee) each strongly condemned the raid, with Greene going so far as to say the FBI should be defunded.
