Coventry City’s Haji Wright has scored just one of his nine goals with his head so far this season

Coventry City boss Mark Robins couldn’t hide his delight at seeing Haji Wright score what he described as a “brilliant” goal with his head against Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.

It begs the question, at 6ft 4 inches tall, why on earth hasn’t the USA international scored more headers, with just two of his nine to date for the Sky Blues being nodded home – the other being the winner against Blackburn Rovers last October.

The obvious explanation is the fact that he’s been deployed out wide on the left of a three-man forward line quite a bit this season, with Matty Godden and Ellis Simms sharing the central striker role up until Tuesday night, when Wright was played down the middle.

Asked which position he prefers, the 25-year-old went for the diplomatic answer, but it feels clear where he would like to play more.

“I feel comfortable in both positions,” he said. “I came as a striker, so I feel comfortable there as well. Playing wider is nothing new to me. I played it quite a bit as a youth player and it’s good to play there.”

City’s record signing joined the club in the summer from Turkish top flight side Antalyaspor, having scored 15 for the club last season and 14 the year before.

“I think last couple of seasons I scored ten plus goals with my head,” he revealed. “I think it is a strength of mine, being as tall as I am, scoring aerial goals and I want to continue doing that. I’m 6ft 4 so I hope I’ll get a few more headed goals.”

Robins pointed to the quality of the ball into the box on Tuesday night, the pinpoint cross coming from Jay Dasilva.

“Fingers crossed, if the service is good I can get my head to it and score more goals,” said the LA born player, who has set himself a goals target for the season.

“It will be lovely to get to double figures and I have a certain expectation for myself that I want to reach by the end of the season. I still have a lot to show and prove to people.”

Asked if his club record £7m fee is a pressure on his shoulders, he added: “I don’t really think about it. I just try to perform on the pitch and show the reason why they brought me here, to perform, score goals and help the team win.”
