Cabinet sees no need for further compensation for inflation

Cabinet sees no need for further compensation for inflation

The caretaker government does not intend to do more to compensate households for the rapidly rising inflation. Various parties had asked State Secretary Dennis Wiersma (Social Affairs) for a repair plan, but he believes that enough is being done for the time being to dampen price increases.

On Budget Day, the outgoing cabinet still assumed that purchasing power would, on average, change little next year, assuming an unchanged personal situation. Since then, however, inflation has risen sharply, partly due to the sharp rise in fuel and energy prices.

Consumer prices were 5.6 percent higher in November than a year earlier, according to the Eurostat statistics, the strongest increase in almost a quarter of a century. With such price increases, the budget for Social Affairs is “completely outdated” according to PvdA MP Henk Nijboer. PVV’er Leon de Jonge fears that families “will fall through their hooves”.

Wiersma understands the concerns in the House. But he emphasizes that the alarming inflation figure for November is a snapshot. The sharp rise in energy prices is the main driver. The expectation is that they will fall again next spring, according to the minister.

In short, it is “too early to predict how purchasing power and inflation will develop next year”, says Wiersma. He also refers to the formation table. According to him, there will “no doubt” be discussed about, for example, increasing the minimum wage, a fervent wish of many parties.

In addition, the caretaker cabinet has already pulled out its wallet to compensate for the significantly higher energy bill. The 3.2 billion euros that have been set aside for this is “not nothing”, says Wiersma. In addition, the national budget has been pushed back to mitigate the rise in health insurance premiums.
