BUSINESS LIVE: August borrowing hits £20.5bn; Kingfisher profits boom; Stagecoach takeover talks

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has warned ministers must ‘control’ the public finances today after the government racked up another £20.5billion of borrowing last month, the second highest figure on record for August.

Home improvement retailer Kingfisher has reported a 61.6 per cent jump in first-half profit on the back of a pandemic do-it-yourself boom and raised its sales expectations for the second half.

Bus operator Stagecoach has confirmed talks over a potential all-share takeover by rival National Express in a move that would bring together two of the UK’s biggest transport groups.
