Britney Spears was ‘heartbroken’ after losing to Christina Aguilera at 2000 Grammys

Britney Spears was said to be “heartbroken” after losing to rival Christina Aguilera at the 2000 Grammy Awards.

The 41-year-old pop idol’s younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears, 32, says it was “really embarrassing” when it was made out the ‘…Baby One More Time’ singer was going to win Best New Artist at the ceremony over the ‘Genie in a Bottle’ hitmaker, 42.

On ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’ this week, she reassured former ‘Made in Chelsea’ star and campmate Sam Thompson, 31, after his podcast ‘Staying Relevant’ was snubbed by the British Podcast Awards.

She said: “Want to hear about something really embarrassing that happened one time?

“It involves my sister. She was up for her first Grammy. It was her and Christina [Aguilera].

“Britney was clearly the bigger star of that year, she worked her ass off.

“They had MTV camera crews at home watching our family, because it was like a no-brainer, she’s winning. And she’s there and she lost.”

She went on: “Christina won it, and by the way remember Christina was wonderfully talented, but that year, I mean come on, let’s be honest, ‘It’s Britney …. like always.”

Recalling her sister’s reaction, she added: “She was really like, ‘I don’t ever want to go to the Grammys.’ She was heartbroken about that because her whole life had been dedicated to winning that.”

The ‘Zoey 101’ star has been somewhat estranged from her elder sister – who regained control of her multimillion-dollar fortune when a conservatorship governed by her immediate family was terminated in 2021 – in recent years amid allegations she was involved in the arrangement, but she made contact with the superstar before heading Down Under to compete on the ITV1 reality show.

Speaking on Monday’s (20.11.23) episode, Jamie Lynn told campmate Fred Sirieix: “I think every family fights and has their stuff but I talked to her before I came here and we love each other.”
