This past weekend, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in a row — taking down the NFC’s No. 1 seed San Francisco 49ers.
While the Chiefs’ greatness is undeniable, there are other teams in NFL history that have made far more dominant runs to their championship titles.
On Thursday, ESPN NFL analyst Mike Greenberg named his top five “Greatest Super Bowl Champions” in NFL history.
At No. 1, Greeny put the 1972 Miami Dolphins.
It’s hard to argue with Greenberg’s No. 1 pick here. In 1972, head coach Don Shula led the Dolphins to the first and only perfect season in NFL history — capping off a 17-0 year with a Super Bowl VII win.
Here’s Greenberg’s full top five:
- 1972 Miami Dolphins
- 1985 Chicago Bears
- 1984 San Francisco 49ers
- 1999 St. Louis Rams
- 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers
Only one of Greenberg’s top five teams played in the 90s, and none played post-2000. His list also excluded each of the teams from the New England Patriots’ dynasty that won six Super Bowl titles over an 18-year span.
