Build heat-resistant classrooms, DepEd urged
MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Francis Tolentino urged the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to build “heat-resistant” classrooms to protect students and teachers from the extreme heat.
The senator on Thursday said that DepEd should consult with the DPWH to ensure that the construction and renovation of classrooms includes proper ventilation.
Tolentino raised the need to prepare for the recurrence of the El Niño phenomenon in 2025 “by ensuring that classrooms are heat-resistant, not just typhoon-resistant.”
He appealed to school authorities to be considerate to students who are unable to attend classes due to the scorching heat.
The DepEd had said that there would be no make-up classes for heat-related absences. Instead, students will receive extra home assignments for missed lessons.
