Mike Grier Says Sharks' Top Prospect Is Ready To Jump To NHL

During Mike Grier’s exit interview, the San Jose Sharks GM said he thinks top prospect Will Smith is ready for the NHL.

The 2023 4th overall pick led Boston College and the NCAA in scoring with 71 points. The BC Eagles went to the National Championship game but fell to Denver University 2-0. Once that game finished, all eyes shifted to whether Smith would sign his entry-level contract.

Grier shed light on where the signing process is but confirmed that nothing official has been done yet.

“I’ve talked to Will [and] his agent. We’ve had some discussions, but we’ll probably have more in the next in the coming days, but it was a good discussion,” Grier said.

Smith is just 19 years old, and turning pro is a significant move. Grier recognized that the mental side of turning pro is just as crucial for his success.

“No decision has been made yet. We’re just continuing to talk to him. He’s a 19-year-old kid in college, enjoying life with not too many cares in the world,” Grier said. “We’ll continue to talk to him and see where it goes.”

While Smith and the Sharks continue to discuss things, the Sharks’ GM said he thinks that his on-ice skills will translate to success at the NHL level.

“I think he’s ready for the NHL. He’s got the brain. He’s got the talent. He’s already maturing physically, and so from my standpoint, I think he can he can play in the league,” Grier said. “Like I said, we’ll continue to have discussions and try to make the best decision for him.”

Smith has time to decide, but based on Grier’s comments, a decision could be made sooner rather than later. If Smith returns to Boston College for his sophomore season, the Sharks will retain his signing rights.
